Datapoint Corp, the litigious company with ambitions to sue the entire videoconferencing industry (CI No 3,299), has entered into a letter of intent to acquire privately held-Dimensional Media Associates, in a deal worth approximately $19m. Datapoint was attracted to DMA because of the New York-based company’s High Definition Volumetric Display (HDVD) technology – which produces a free floating, 3D image that can be seen without special glasses, and its prestigious client list, which includes BMW and Pepsi-Cola. A spokesperson for Datapoint said that the two companies have already had initial conversations concerning the obvious progeny of such a tie-up, a 3D videoconferencing product. Datapoint CEO and President described the acquisition as a strategic shift for Datapoint, when questioned if the company would have considered such an acquisition before losing its claim for upwards of $200m in damages against PictureTel Corp (CI No 3,401) – currently on appeal – the spokesman said it probably would have Whatever, the company may soon have another tidbit for the hard working company set up to protect its patents, Minx Patents Inc (CI No 3,402).
