Data Race Inc of San Antonio, Texas has announced an error correcting, full-duplex, auto-dial, 9,600bps, internal personal computer modem, which costs $795. The product, called PC-Race 96, has external Race-VM interactive and external BMX-VM optimised file-transfer modems and is compatible with other PC Race modems. It embodies Race-VM’s patented, asymmetrical full duplex intelligent data compression/error correction technology. It also uses the BMX-VM half-duplex, fast line-turnaround technology for optimum file-transfer or block mode applications. Users can choose the Race interactive mode and BMX block file transfer mode to combine both communication styles in one modem. The PC-Race series offers modular compatibility with other modem standards, as follows: the PC-Race 96 offers 9,600bps interactive, 19,200bps BMX file transfer, both fully error corrected, for $795; the PC-Race 24 at $595 is CCITT V22 compatible with MNP Level 4; and the PC-Race 24/96 offers a combination of the two at $995. The product can be field upgraded to PC-Race 24/96 from either initial version. Either version can be upgraded to PC-Race 24/96. PC-Race series modems are compatible with the Hayes command set and have enhancements that allow parameter settings by the personal computer communications software. All models also have a speaker fitted with a volume control for monitoring call progress.
