DATA GENERAL’s US BUSINESS IS SPOTTY

By CBR Staff Writer

Data General Corp’s US business remains spotty and erratic, president Ed de Castro told shareholders at the annual meeting this week. It does not have the strong, consistent pattern yet that would give us confidence of a strong 1988 in the US. International business on the other hand appears to be remaining strong. Saying that the company hesitates to be too euphoric, he commented that orders could still be cancelled or delayed, although it had not seen that happening. If demand patterns remain favourable and worldwide capital spending continues to increase, we should have a good year. The firm, back in profit in its first quarter, said orders fell in that period but saw this as the normal seasonal tail-off at year-end.
