Data General Corp has unveiled Communications Server, a suite of intelligent communications software initially running on its Eclipse MV machines – AViiON Unix is planned, which was developed here in the UK at its European Communications Competence Centre in Cambridge. Consisting of the central applications, peer gateways and client application services, the Communications Server includes the X400 message handling and X500 directory standards and gateways to IBM’s SNA Distribution Services for DisOSS access; Data General’s own Comprehensive Electronic Office; facsimile and telex. It handles translations of word processing formats between systems so users see the text in their local format. It supports MS-DOS micros on Ethernet and Token Ring; it costs from $100,000 to $641,000 from first quarter 1990.
