Data General Corp has chosen Sydney, Australia as its Asia-Pacifc regional base and plans to invest $16.7m over five years to develop the operation: Australia had to bid against Singapore and Hong Kong and we are extremely pleased with this outcome, Philip Kerrigan, Data General Australia managing director, said, citing competitive Australian wages, an open and highly competitive Australian communications market and a federal government waiver on the wholesale sales tax for equipment already owned by Data General and transferred to Australia as reasons for choosing Sydney; the new base is expected to begin operations the middle of the year, will generate revenues of an estimated $6.75m over the next five years for international leased line traffic.
