Zmanda has launched ZCloud, an open API that will simplify the development of backup-to-cloud applications by providing an interface for storage cloud and backup software vendors.
Zmanda is the sponsor of the ZCloud open source community project, and has also released an open source reference implementation of ZCloud.
Steve Lesem, president and CEO of Mezeo Software, a cloud storage platform provider, said: “Backup-to-Cloud is a key application of storage clouds. We are excited about the ZCloud API, as it will help us to easily integrate backup software applications with our cloud without requiring cloud storage service provider developers to understand the specifics of any particular backup software.”
The company said that by enabling ZCloud API, a storage cloud becomes a destination of ever-growing eco-system of backup-to-cloud applications, including Amanda – the open source backup project.

Zmanda said, by supporting ZCloud API, a backup software vendor can use a choice of storage clouds, including Amazon S3, as well as private storage clouds as a destination of its backup archives.
