Worldwide external controller-based (ECB) disk storage revenue dropped 7.3% to $3.9 billion in the third quarter of 2009, compared to the same period last year, according to a study by IT research and advisory firm Gartner.
EMC gained the top spot with 26.7% revenue market share, double that of its closest competitor IBM, which is placed second with 13.2%. EMC’s revenue declined 4.9% to $1.11 billion, compared to $1.06 billion in the same period last year. IBM’s revenue was down 5.1% to $524.2m from $552.2m.
HP stood third with 10.8%, while Hitachi, Dell and NetApp were ranked fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively, by the narrowest of margins. Hitachi achieved an 8.8% market share, while Dell and NetApp each achieved 8.6%. Dell and NetApp’s revenue was separated by only $2m. Sun Microsystems placed seventh with 3.6% market share.
HP’s revenue declined by 14.3% to $428.1m, Hitachi revenue declined by 16.5% to $349.8m while Dell revenue was down 9.8% to $341.2m, compared to same period last year.
Donna Taylor, principal research analyst for global storage quarterly statistics program at Gartner, said: “The year-over-year decline of 7.3% indicates that the economic downturn’s impact on the disk array storage market is loosening its grip. The prior two quarters in 2009 showed declines in the double digits. This is good news for storage vendors, because it’s the first sign of a light at the end of the tunnel.”
