Worldwide external controller-based (ECB) disk storage revenue in the first quarter of 2010 grew 18.3% as compared with the same period last year, according to Gartner.

The total revenue from Worldwide ECB stood at $4.5bn in the first quarter of 2010, an increase of $0.7bn from $3.8bn in the first quarter of 2009.

The firm said that all the major countries recorded a double-digit year-on-year growth, except for the Japan market, while North America market recorded 25.5% growth.

According to Gartner, EMC has maintained its top position by recording $1.22bn revenue for Worldwide ECB disk storage vendor revenue followed by IBM with $527.3m, NetApp with $469.1m, Dell with $437.6m and HP recorded $416.4m for the same first quarter of 2010.

Roger Cox, research vice president at Gartner, said: The more cost-effective ECB disk storage systems that conform to the modular architecture continue to gain share, with the more expensive monolithic/frame-based ECB storage systems declining to 27.7% of the total ECB disk storage market in the first quarter of 2010.

Year over year, raw terabyte shipments grew 65% in the first quarter of 2010, while the price per terabyte decreased 28.3%.
