Next-gen USB connectors to be reversible

Scheduled to be launched in 2016, the new cable will allow plugging into a device in any orientation.

By CBR Staff Writer

USB 3.0 Promoter Group is currently working on forthcoming USB version, Type-C connector, which would have a reversible connector plug, allowing users to plug it into a device in any orientation.

The upcoming USB version, which would rival Apple’s Lightning connector, will support future technologies such as USB Power Delivery, high-speed data transfer, and video-over-USB.

The MicroUSB sized next-gen USB connector will boast of an array of latest features including scalable power charging and offers data transfer speeds of up to 10Gbit/s, which is double what is currently possible.

The next-gen smaller USB connector will boast a completely new design customised to comply with emerging product designs and would scale for future USB bus performance, while supporting power charging.

USB 3.0 Promoter Group chairman Brad Saunders said that while USB technology is well established as the favoured choice for connecting and powering devices, the new connector would now meet evolving design trends in terms of size and usability.

"The new Type-C connector will fit well with the market’s direction and affords an opportunity to lay a foundation for future versions of USB," Saunders said.

Scheduled for industry review during the first quarter of 2014, the final specification of the new USB Type-C specification would be finalised by the middle of 2014, with the launch anticipated by 2016.
