Western Digital has launched two new mobile hard drives, the Scorpio Blue 750 GB and 2.5-inch 1TB HDD. These drives have a 12.5mm form factor and are suitable for use in mobile storage applications including select notebooks and small form factor desktop PCs.

The company claims that both Scorpio Blue drives deliver high-performance with a 3GB/s transfer rate and comes with WhisperDrive technology that makes the device quiet. It said that 1TB model is the highest-capacity 2.5-inch drive available.

The WD Scorpio Blue Features, ShockGuard combines firmware and hardware advancements to meet shock tolerance specifications required for mobile and notebook applications.

It also features SecurePark, which ensures that recording heads don’t touch the disk surface during spin up, spin down and when the drive is off, the company said.

The company has released new 1TB and 750GB capacity My Passport Essential SE portable USB drives. It is equipped with sync and encryption software. WD Sync software allows consumers to take desktop content with them by simplifying the synchronisation of essential personal files and Microsoft Outlook data on a PC.

Jim Morris, senior vice president and general manager of client systems at WD, said: The convergence of the growing mobile computing and digital media trends produces demand for desktop-like capacities in portable devices. Our new WD Scorpio Blue drives enable people to take even more of their digital collections with them wherever they go and, realising the value of their data, back up their notebooks on their My Passport drives.

The retail price for the WD Scorpio Blue 1 TB drive is expected to be $250 and the 750 GB version is expected to be $190.
