Virtual Instruments peers into SAN performance

Boosts utilisation and availability, says firm

By Steve Evans

Virtual Instruments has announced the release of SANInsight 10G Fibre Traffic Access Point (TAP) Patch Panel System. The new platform aims to help with the diagnosis of issues in the storage area network (SAN) and virtual infrastructure.

The platform’s predictive capabilities mean companies should be able to have a much better understanding of their virtual infrastructure, so they can be made aware of problems before they begin to impact users. It can also improve application availability and increase infrastructure utilisation.

“We want to give customers full transactional visibility across the virtualised infrastructure, so you know immediately what is going wrong. Nine times out of ten it’s an I/O problem,” Len Rosenthal, VP of marketing at Virtual Instruments (VI), told CBR. “We instrument the infrastructure so you can see what’s going on and know what the problems are and how to solve them”

TAPs provide insight into SAN performance, utilisation and transmission issues by essentially copying the information that flows through them and help IT admins provide high application availability. VI’s new platform integrates a network TAP function into a fibre-optic patch panel enclosure, the company said.

It is vendor independent so works across all fibre-channel storage products and adds no latency to the network and does not alter live traffic.

“The SANInsight TAP Patch Panel System was designed to help our customer’s optimise the availability of their SANs and reduce the business risk of deploying virtualised mission-critical applications,” said Mark Urdahl, CEO, Virtual Instruments. “With TAPs deployed on every Fibre Channel link as a best practice, enterprise data centre managers can rest assured that the availability, utilisation and performance of their virtualised infrastructure will be optimised.”
