USB 3.0 enhancement to double data performance to 10 Gbps

The new supplement to the USB 3.0 specification is up for industry review during the first quarter of 2013

By CBR Staff Writer

The USB 3.0 Promoter Group has developed an updated USB 3.0 specification which is claimed to double the data performance of existing devices from 5 Gbps to 10 Gbps.

The new SuperSpeed USB features enhanced USB connectors and cables that are fully compatible with existing USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 devices.

Computers, digital cameras and hubs, however, will need new USB controller hardware to take advantage of the new USB 3.0 interface.

USB 3.0 Promoter Group chairman Brad Saunders said: "With USB technology continuing to be the data and power delivery path of choice across personal computing and consumer electronics, we are always looking ahead to how to best improve user experience and connectivity performance."

"Doubling SuperSpeed USB performance will be especially beneficial for emerging USB docking and storage applications," he added.

The USB 3.0 Promoter Group comprises HP, Intel, Microsoft, Renesas Electronics, ST-Ericsson and Texas Instruments.
