U2 has found what they’re looking for with EMC all-flash tech

Company is helping to run the band's shows on its world tour.

By James Nunns

EMC is adding some extra flash to U2’s world tour with its all-flash technology.

Finding ways to save money but to maintain the high levels of glitz and glamour in their live performances, the band has turned to EMC.

The special effects and dazzling sets are driven in part by flash storage and back-up systems from the company.

The VNXe 3200 all-flash is being used by the bands creative team with their MAC OS X and PC Windows 7 platforms. This helps to create, store and deliver visuals for each show.

Creating the visuals is just one challenge, the next is to record them. Each show is recorded on over 20 high-definition video cameras that are focused on the band members, in addition to cameras capturing audience reactions.

This can add up to thousands of hours of video. The video streams are recorded from every camera onto the VNXe 3200, additional efficiencies are achieved through archiving each night’s show to an EMC Data Domain 2500.

The DD2500 is designed to protect the data and can reduce storage requirements up to 30 times. Every camera captures around 1TB of data per night and the DD2500 offers a maximum throughput of 13.4TB per hour and can protect 6.6PB of data.
