Toshiba has entered the music and video download market with the launch of Toshiba Places, a new cloud-based offering.

Toshiba Places claims to connect a PC, a tablet computer and a TV for a media experience where one can watch Internet videos, listen to music and view photographs in any of them.

Toshiba Places will be available via a Web browser on a PC or tablet computer and through a user interface on Toshiba Regza TVs.
The "places" that could be used anywhere and anytime includes video place, music place, news place, game place, app place and services place.

However, all services are not compatible with all machines. While video, music and social places are accessible on both TVs and computers, news and TV are limited to TV viewers. Game, app and services are restricted to the PC. The TV Place includes TV guides and BBC iPlayer.

Online music company 7Digital powers the music place. Flickr and Dailymotion offer the services for sharing video and photos.

The company said that a key feature of the new offering is the ease with which users can share content.

Toshiba said, "An integrated networking platform also allows users to virtually bookmark their favourite content and share this with friends."

The company said it will expand and develop the service to support more devices, additional places and compatibility with social networks and cloud-based storage services.

Toshiba Places will be available live across Europe in a few months.
