Teradata 2015 Partners: 10 things to watch out for by industry

List: 'Breaking Big' with digital transformation and disruption are the key aspects of this year’s conference.

Five days, over 200 sessions and 6,000 attendees. Teradata is this week hosting its most important yearly event in Los Angeles.

CBR lists ten topics and their sessions that should be part of everyone’s agenda.

1. Sensors and IoT

The company has said it will reveal its "biggest news of the year" on Monday, and that news is rumoured to involve IoT and machine learning.

Further to this, the firm has organised several track sessions focused on the IoT. On Sunday, Karthik Guruswamy, principal consultant at Teradata, will talk IoT pattern finding and machine learning with SAX.

Other sessions include automating IoT data process in Hadoop and analytics on Teradata, analytics and the IoT wih Bill Franks, CAO, and Hadoop for manufacturing innovation and IoT.

2. Cybersecurity

With security concerns threatening innovation, getting security right is a must across sectors. Teradata has compiled 12 security specific sessions for the California event.

Highlights go to Sunday’s track session "Cyber hunter, oh cyber hunter, wherefore art thou?" presented by Teradata’s Jay Irwin, director of information security, privacy and regulatory compliance, and Stephen Luebke, senior security architect.

Other sessions will explore how to hack Hadoop and prevent it from happening, how to securely adopt big data analytics in the public sector, and "anarchy does not scale: your Hadoop data lake needs governance".


3. Automotive

Smart cars are a hot topic and one of the first ways consumers will experience IoT. Attending Teradata’s Partners 2015 is Jan Wassén, director of business analytics at Volvo.

The "Leverage your data investment with cross-functional business analytics" session will present the approach and working model with the business and relevant analytical use cases, together with the organisational and cultural challenges faced in starting up and growing this initiative.

Wassén could also speak on the values of the connected car. Volvo has recently said that it will take full liability for accidents involving any of its driverless cars.


4. Retail

Digital transformation is not only impacting the car sector, but also the retail space. During Partners 2015, highlights in this field go to two track sessions.

Frist, Mike Dranov, head of loyalty program a Coop, and Katja Andersen, senior industry consultant at Teradata, will discuss "from data to data driven… accelerating customer loyalty with insights".

Another session will look at "Hadoop in action for retail". Headed by Eric Thorsen, GM for retail industry solutions at Hortonworks, the session will discuss how retail and e-tail companies are utilising Hadoop to build a 360° view of lifetime customer value, analyse brand sentiment, and optimise websites.


5. Communications

Several telcos will be present at the conference including Vodafone, Verizon, Turk Telecom, O2 and Telefónica.

Speaking for data science driven organisations, Nilanjan Sarkar, GM for marketing and communications at Vodafone Hutchison Australia, will explain how Vodafone uses analytics and automation to create personalised customer journeys.

From Turkcell, Ismail Yildiz, domain architect and senior DWH&BI analyst, and Sena Aydeniz, BI expert, will talk "big value on network analytics".

Ashwin Bhosale, associate director for big data and cross channel analytics at Verizon Wireless, and Linda Chappell, Sr. industry consultant at Teradata, will discuss "democratisation of data and analytics".


6. Consumer

Big data goes hand in hand with IoT, and is starting to have an impact in the consumer goods market. Discussions around the connected consumer, marketing in this new era, and customer experience will all feature at the event.

One of the track sessions discussing this topics is "Advanced forecasting supporting the retail supply chain business promises", presented on Tuesday by Dean Furness, applications systems engineer at Wells Fargo, and Kathy Koontz, AVP for customer information management at Nationwide Insurance.

On Wednesday, Steve Aaron, consumer architect at Procter and Gamble, and John O’Donovan, director of consumer insight solutions and manufacturing at Teradata, will talk "Connected Consumer: Continuing the Evolution to Data Driven Marketing", to discuss the key ingredients of direct communication best practices that P&G has leveraged across a global marketplace as well as the value of the connected consumer.


7. Digital Media

The connected consumer is also an avid user of technology and digital media plays a key role in the engagement with potential buyers.

Michael Greene, director for customer 360 and data visualisation at Symantec, is going to be "Getting Real 360 degree Customer/Product Analytics" on stage.

He will discuss the fact that success in today’s competitive marketplace requires the agility to quickly test theories and new ideas that drive innovation to exploit market opportunities and react to competitive pressures.


8. BI Technologies

"Search vs. BI – Epic Battle or the perfect Match?" has been a question made by many as businessintelligence (BI) becomes more relevant in the digital based enterprise.

Speaking on this will be Ajeet Singh, CEO of ThoughtSpot, and Scott Holden, VP for marketing at the company. They have said that the holy grail of BI has always been for business users to get instant answers from their enterprise-wide data.

Singh and Holden will talk how to deliver search-driven analytics at enterprise data scale and how they did it to some of the Fortune 500 companies in industries like retail, healthcare, financial services and manufacturing.


9. Future of data

The industry will also try to provide an overview of what data will be like by 2020.

Will Hayes, CEO at Lucidworks, will address attendees on Monday to talk search, the foundation and future of data analytics including the future of search, how signal processing and machine learning amplify the quality of search results.

By 2020, the total amount of data in the world will reach 44 zetabytes. Despite the craze to get "data-driven," many companies have not yet figured out how to make actual use of their data. To put their data to work, companies need search technology.


10. 2016 Roadmap

Company conferences are not just made of keynotes, they are also made of general sessions which reveal their plans for the months ahead.

With two planned general sessions (Monday and Wednesday), Teradata will be revealing new products and visions for 2016.

Hadoop, big data, machine learning, IoT and analytics will all be at the heart of the company’s plans for next year.
