For commercial manufacturers, having devices on the internet of things, with inter-connected services, can allow products like cars telling when they need to be serviced or diapers alerting when they need to be changed to be possible.
The consumer market and mass market are becoming much more interested in connected products. This interest has opened the door for companies acting as an infrastructure between device data and user communication, like Pachube.
Pachube’s Founder, Usman Haque, describes the technology behind the company as a sort of Twitter for censors, machines, buildings, and the environment, which provides a way where devices can publish their ‘real time’ status. The data can be shared with other spaces or have web and mobile application implementation to control data coming from sensor devices.
"The data is stored in Pachube and you can access that data through a Pachube web page and our API, a specification used as an interface by software components to communicate with each other, or an application that someone has built," he said.
This means pre heating the oven to the right temperature before you get home can be possible.
The technology has to do with HTTP, what is typed into a browser to access a webpage, which can be used as a transport mechanism for data.
"We are using HTTP to enable communication between sensors, machines and sensors, and also the really important part which is between these machines and people. So the technology is not really dissimilar from many scalable systems used with networks like Facebook."
