Tech giants take on AI challenges in new partnership

The partnership includes experts from Amazon, Google, Microsoft and other tech giants.

By Alexander Sword

A new partnership of some of the biggest names in the technology world will seek to explore the benefits of artificial intelligence (AI).

Amazon, Google, DeepMind (owned by Google), Facebook, IBM and Microsoft have formed a non-profit organisation that will seek to unite AI experts and knowledge called the Partnership on Artificial Intelligence to Benefit People and Society.

The group says that it will support research and recommend best practices in areas including “ethics, fairness, and inclusivity; transparency and interoperability; privacy; collaboration between people and AI systems; and of the trustworthiness, reliability, and robustness of the technology.”

This will include creating an open platform for engagement, where researchers and stakeholders can  discuss AI-related issues.

It will also aim to engage experts across multiple disciplines in academia, including psychology, philosophy, economics, finance, sociology, public policy, and law, aiming to produce informational materials on the topic.

It will also support third-party studies and engage AI users and developers, as well as industries that may be impacted by AI.

In terms of the individual leaders, the programme will be co-chaired by DeepMind’s Mustafa Suleyman, co-founder and Head of Applied AI at the company, and Eric Horvitz, Technical Fellow and managing director of Microsoft’s Redmond, Washington research lab.

It will also be led by Ralf Herbrich, Director of Machine Learning at Amazon and Managing Director of the Amazon Development Center Germany, Greg Corrado, senior scientist at Google Research, Yann LeCun, Direct of AI Research at Facebook and Francesca Rossi, research scientists at the IBM T.J, Watson Research Centre.

The group, in its mission statements, status as a non-profit and its very choice of name, seems to be aiming to make a positive case for AI at a time when people are wary of the technology.

Technology leaders such as Stephen Hawking, Elon Musk, and Bill Gates have all warned that artificial intelligence could pose a danger to mankind.

“It’s precisely because AI has the potential to have such a major positive impact on the world, that we believe it’s critical that we build new models of open collaboration and accountability around it,” said DeepMind in a statement announcing the project.

Accenture last week released research suggesting that AI could double economic growth.
