About 44% of UK CEOs believe that the ‘resistance to change’ by their staff is the mail obstacle for the adoption of electronic document management (EDM), according to a new survey.

The survey was carried out by EASY Software during February-March 2013, which involved several UK firms including financial services, manufacturing, logistics and local government agencies.

About 32% of the 44% surveyed users said that resistance to change by users had been the single biggest challenge, while about 12% said that resistance to change by the management team had been an issue.

EASY Software UK sales & marketing director Howard Frear said the resistance to change is still the biggest factor that organisations face when adopting document management applications.

"But it does show that the industry as a whole has a lot more work to do in educating people about the benefits and allaying their fears," Frear said.

"Organisations with compliance, legal and disaster recovery issues will reap huge rewards, while users themselves will save a lot of time and space and ultimately be freed up to do more interesting and challenging work.

"Of course, change can sometimes be disruptive and stressful, but we have 11,000 satisfied customers worldwide who have successfully taken the plunge and now can’t imagine life without it."

In addition, the Finance Department topped the list of investments in EDM with 52% firms supporting investments in the sector, followed by Operations/Manufacturing and the IT Department.

About 20% surveyed believed that EDM has been mainly adopted to reduce dependence on paper, while 16% supported for reducing storage, with 15% to enhance information sharing.
