SkySQL and Monty Program, the two companies offering third-party support for Oracle’s open-source MySQL database, have merged, reuniting the key members of the original MySQL developer and services teams.

The reunited team will provide support for all versions of MySQL and develop MariaDB to make it more interoperable.

The merger is claimed to combine cloud and big data capabilities that will allow the new company to offer an interface for open source technology providers.

With the collaboration, the teams of both the companies will work to address issues including support for all MySQL database releases, and offer access to data in multiple database formats like SQL and NoSQL.

SkySQL, in collaboration with customers, partners and community members, will invest in the development of the MariaDB server, develop new applications that allow MySQL and MariaDB database users to manage data in the enterprise and cloud, and improve services.

The agreement is expected to be closed in about four months and will be led by SkySQL CEO Patrik Sallner, while MySQL & MariaDB creator Michael Monty Widenius will be appointed as the CTO by the MariaDB Foundation.
