SGI, a provider of HPC, storage and data centre offerings, has introduced InfiniteStorage Server 3500, an integrated storage server which is aimed at high performance computing and enterprise applications.

The company claims that the new platform supports low latency protocols, including iSER for iSCSI over InfiniBand and is a perfect target for high performance computing (HPC) clusters such as SGI Altix ICE. In addition, its speed and density capabilities benefit applications such as video surveillance, data warehousing and object storage for Lustre.

According to SGI, the ISS3500 leverages the company’s suite of InfiniteStorage software offerings such as Data Migration Facility (DMF) to virtualise multiple disk types in one system. In a 4U chassis, the new offering features 36 drive bays for 3.5 inches SATA, SAS and SSD drives to pack up to 72TB into a single system.

The ISS3500 includes high-availability features as standard, including redundant power supplies and a redundant, hot-pluggable cooling system. It also features ISS3500 features new Intel dual-socket processors to provide x64 application compatibility. It is available with a variety of standard storage protocols, including iSER, iSCSI, NFS and CIFs, SGI said.

In addition, the new offering is also bundled with the company’s XFS file system and includes a choice of infrastructure connectivity including ethernet, InfiniBand and 10Gb ethernet.

Bill Mannel, vice president of product marketing at SGI, said: “With organisations looking for a fully integrated storage server solution, SGI InfiniteStorage Server 3500 offers customers a flexible yet powerful platform. This is a system that addresses high performance requirements, but at an aggressive price point.”
