SGI, a provider of HPC and data centre offerings, has introduced InfiniteStorage 5000, a RAID storage system that combines edge hardware with a choice of host interfaces and drive technologies in an external storage platform.
The company claims that the new InfiniteStorage 5000 employs 6Gb/s SAS technology and provides multi-protocol host connectivity, performance and scalability, flexible drive support, advanced energy savings and data security features, and is a primary or secondary storage offering for tiered virtualisation implementations.
SGI said that InfiniteStorage 5000 is suitable as a front-end for active archive architectures that use COPAN MAID offering on the back-end, and also complements its Altix UV server and Rackable rackmount server environments.
The InfiniteStorage 5000 delivers bandwidth up to 4,000MB/s on sustained reads from disk, and delivers 40,000 IOPS (input/output operations per second) random disk reads.
In addition, the new offering allows customers to deploy solid-state drives (SSDs) or SAS drives for application workloads as well as SAS drives for less performance-sensitive, high-capacity applications, SGI said.
