Say cheese! How Veeam and NetApp snapshots could let firms backup every 15 minutes

Storage snapshots allow backup of individual files.

By Joe Curtis

Virtualised backup firm Veeam is integrating its replication solution with NetApp’s own set of ‘Snap’ tools to provide companies with a fast, business hours backup service.

Veeam makes copies of data on VMWare and Hyper-V virtual machines, but the deal with NetApp means the two companies can now provide backup to storage arrays, meaning businesses can carry out quick backup during business hours without affecting the performance of servers supporting business-critical applications.

The product, Veeam Backup & Replication v8, is set for general release sometime after June, and uses the low recovery point objective (RPO – the maximum tolerable period in which data might be lost from an IT service due to a major incident) enabled by NetApp’s Snapshot technology to back up the business’s applications every 15 minutes.

Veeam CEO Ratmir Timashev said: "We’re now transforming a key enabling technology for the modern data centre, bringing additional value and capabilities to ensure that the most-critical services of our 100,000 customers remain always on and always available."

NetApp’s AJ Mahajan added: "In an effort to control data protection costs, and to get more value out of their backup data, customers are increasingly looking at snapshots to increase their storage efficiency."

The storage snapshots "are small, taking up relatively little space", claim the firms, and would allow replication on very small scales, down to the size of separate files.
