Red Hat acquires open-source storage company Gluster

Will provide customers storage services that manage their file-based data on-premise in the cloud, says company

By CBR Staff Writer

Open source offerings provider Red Hat has signed a deal to acquire storage company Gluster for $136m (£88.5m).

According to Computing, Gluster has developed an open-source distributed file system designed for "big data applications and cloud computing environments." The company’s customers include Pandora, Box.net and Samsung.

"The explosion of big data and the new paradigm of cloud computing are converging, forcing IT to re-think storage investments that are cost-effective, manageable and scale for the future,"

Red Hat chief technology officer Brian Stevens said, "Our customers are looking for software-based storage solutions that manage their file-based data on-premise, in the cloud and bridging between the two."

"With unstructured data growth – such as log files, virtual machines, email, audio, video and documents – the 90s paradigm of forcing everything into expensive, single-system DBMS residing on an internal corporate SAN has become unwieldy and impractical," said Stevens.

Earlier, Red Hat Cloud Business vice-president and general manager Scott Crenshaw had said many organisations across a wide range of industries that are using cloud capabilities have told them that Red Hat Enterprise Linux, among other Red Hat solutions, brings them a great value in cloud environments.
