Worldwide purpose-built backup appliance (PBBA) factory revenues recorded a 16.5% year-over-year growth to $679m during the first quarter of 2013, according to a report from International Data Corporation (IDC).
According to the report, the total PBBA open systems market revenue grew by 22.8% to $612.2m, compared to the corresponding period last year.
Total worldwide PBBA capacity shipment went up by 451% year over year to 361,289 terabytes, the report revealed.
IDC Data Protection and Recovery research director, Robert Amatruda, said that the total worldwide PBBA market outpaced the external disk storage system and data protection and recovery markets by a wide margin in the first quarter of 2013.
"The worldwide PBBA market continues to experience strong growth in revenue, capacity, and shipments," Amatruda said.
"Long-term, we expect the worldwide PBBA will continue to outpace the overall data protection and recovery software and hardware markets as customers continue to embrace turnkey systems to alleviate their backup and recovery challenges."
In the first quarter, EMC led the PBBA market with 58.9% revenue share recording an 8.4% growth, followed by Symantec with 15.1%market share with a 149.3% growth in the revenue, while IBM occupied third spot with 7.1% market share in spite of 30.5% decrease in revenue.
