Personal and entry-level storage (PELS) market increased 2.9% year over year with shipment reaching 18.6 million units during the third quarter of 2013, according to a report from the International Data Corporation (IDC).

According to the report, the PELS shipment generated revenue of $1.7bn during the quarter, a slight decrease compared to the same period previous year.

IDC Storage Systems research manager Liz Conner said the third quarter of 2013 brought continued shipment growth for the personal and entry-level storage market despite comparison with the strong quarter a year ago.

"In 2012 the third quarter showed very strong growth as the PELS market went into recovery mode after the Thailand floods and resulting hard disk drive (HDD) shortage," Conner said.

"The fact that the PELS market was able to build upon this, and show year-over-year growth points to the demand for PELS storage and the success vendors have had with newer products, such as higher speed interfaces, home NAS, portable drives, and business class products."

During the third quarter, HDD vendors’s share increased in the PELS markets by 1.8 points year over year to 74.5%, while the entry-level storage market was led by the non-HDD vendors with 69.0% share of the total shipments, a 5.7 points decrease.

The double-bay personal storage storage market remained same as the previous year, whereas the single-bay personal storage devices accounted for 97.1% share in shipments.

For the quarter, the personal storage represents 98.9% of the PELS units shipped and 88.0% of the shipment revenue.
