Oracle has introduced its Application Express Release 4.2, which is claimed to improve the productivity of developing database-centric, HTML5 applications for desktop and mobile platforms.
Application Express is a SQL-centric development tool that allows developers to build applications leveraging their SQL and PL/SQL skills.
With the Release 4.2, developers can build declarative applications that can run on any mobile platform, the company said.
Orcale Application Express Release 4.2 new features include: mobile applications, mobile themes and templates, HTML5 charts, HTML5 item types and packaged applications.
The mobile applications provides user with the ability to build Oracle Application Express application once and automatically render an appropriate user interface when accessed.
Release 4.2 leverages jQuery Mobile to allow the mobile themes to function on all major mobile platforms without need for modification.
It also Includes HTML5 item types that allows user to specify item types for number, email, telephone and URL which enhances the user experience when entering data on HTML5 aware mobile devices. The HTML5 charting allows charts to display on devices that don’t support Flash.
Application Express Release 4.2 includes a collection of productivity applications that allow users to start utilising their database investment. It can also unlock these applications, allowing developers to customise and learn best practices.
The Application Express Release 4.2, which is included with all editions and current releases of Oracle Database, can be downloaded from Oracle Technology Network (OTN).
Oracle Database Tools vice president Mike Hichwa said Application Express 4.2 helps developers create applications that incorporate Responsive Web Design or jQuery Mobile to provide optimal viewing experience on all devices.
"Another key feature being introduced are the Packaged Applications which provide out-of-the-box point solutions," Hichwa said.
"The primary benefits of these include instantly available productivity applications, the ability to unlock and customize the solutions provided, and to learn best practices."
