A new survey has revealed that a third of people returning to work after the new year break will already be stressed out by the threat of redundancy and fears of an increased workload.
The survey, commissioned by e-learning systems vendor SkillSoft and carried out by OnePoll, polled over 3,000 employees working in all sectors of business across the UK.
It found that 44% of workers admitted to be losing sleep through stress, almost a third were becoming over-emotional for the same reason and 15% were drinking to help them cope.
Of those quizzed at the end of November, 24% admitted to taking time off work due to stress.
The company said that almost a quarter of employees feel they have a lack of control over their day, a third are frustrated with their working environment and 15% feel they don’t have enough training to allow them to do their jobs as well as they’d like.
At a time when companies are faced with having to make difficult staffing decisions, SkillSoft maintains executives should be making more use of products and services that provide additional resources for employees who are part of a layoff or workforce reduction. Its e-learning packages support skills development for career planning, job seeking, interviewing, personal finance and stress management.
Professional body the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development has confirmed that the new year is shaping up to be the worst year for jobs in two decades. Predictions of UK job losses total 600,000 in 2009.
