NetApp unveils new offerings for backup and recovery in Microsoft environments

Allows customers to utilise data management capabilities in physical and virtual environments

By CBR Staff Writer

NetApp has unveiled new SnapManager for Hyper-V and SnapManager 6.0 for Microsoft Exchange Server to improve data backup and recovery in Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 and Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 environments.

NetApp SnapManager for Microsoft SQL Server and SnapManager for Microsoft SharePoint server can now run on windows server 2008 R2, allowing customers to utilise NetApp data management capabilities in physical and virtual environments.

According to NetApp, the SnapManager for Hyper-V enables automated, policy-based backup and recovery for applications and services running on Windows Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V and Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008 R2, eliminating backup bottlenecks, reduce human error, and minimise the interruption and performance impact caused by server-hosted backup and restore. NetApp now enables Microsoft virtualisation customers to expand or shrink volumes to reclaim unused storage capacity in shared storage environments.

The SnapManager for Exchange Server can help reduce storage footprint and increase operational efficiencies in the data centre by minimising the number of exchange data copies that enterprise customers need to deploy. It integrates single mailbox recovery capabilities to enable exchange administrators to offload routine e-mail restore operations to help-desk personnel.

In addition, the SnapManager for Exchange Server is integrated with Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Services (VSS) technology to provide backup and restore support for new Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 Database Availability Group (DAG) architecture.

NetApp’s new ApplianceWatch PRO 2.0 management pack offers customers discovery, health monitoring, and performance monitoring of their NetApp storage systems with Microsoft Systems Centre Operations Manager. It also includes a separate management pack that integrates NetApp storage controller knowledge with Microsoft System Centre Virtual Machine Manager to provide a virtualisation management service.

Patrick Rogers, vice president of solutions and alliances at NetApp, said: NetApp complements Microsoft virtualisation solutions to help meet the most demanding uptime requirements of physical and virtualised environments. Together, we provide customers a compelling value proposition to help reduce costs and deploy, manage, and maintain their complex infrastructures to get the most value from their storage and server investments.
