NetApp, Desktone partner to deliver new desktops as a service application

The new joint application will enable service providers to avoid the virtual desktop deployment challenges

By CBR Staff Writer

Storage and data management applications provider NetApp and cloud-hosted virtual desktops as a service provider Desktone have partnered to jointly offer a new application that claimed to simplify the delivery of virtual desktops as a service (DaaS).

With the new application, service providers can avoid the virtual desktop deployment challenges by reducing startup costs, removing design and management complexity and improving performance.

The new service, which is built for cloud delivery environments, helps service providers to deploy a full-featured service that enables their customers to take the benefits of virtual desktops

In addition, the joint application features the technology that enables a single infrastructure to be elastically scalable and cost efficient. It also claims to support deployment on FlexPod, a pretested and validated data centre platform for networking, computing and storage.

The integration of Desktone and NetApp will take the advantage of NetApp storage efficiency technologies, such as thin provisioning and deduplication, to minimise storage requirements on a platform designed to use 50% less storage.

NetApp Product and Solutions Marketing vice president Brendon Howe said: "NetApp and Desktone’s enterprise-ready desktops as a service solution enables service providers to deliver on-demand, cost-effective solutions that allow enterprise IT to more easily meet their end-user business objectives."

The combined NetApp and Desktone application enables service providers to securely deliver desktops to multiple customers from one platform and manage desktop images, virtual machines, user assignments and desktop support.

It also adds home directories, group shares, and automated backup of user data with NetApp storage features.

The FlexClone technology enables near-instant provisioning of new desktops for users with little or no additional compute requirements, while the APIs support service provider-based business operations.
