MariaDB & Google bring encryption to open source databases

Security contribution helps to create multi-layer protection.

The latest version of MariaDB is being released with a special contribution from Google.

Version 10.1 offers users the ability to fully encrypt their databases, with the company stating that this can be achieved without any changes to applications and won’t result in performance degradation.

Commercial databases and applications can be migrated to the latest version. This will enable organisations to encrypt databases and protect data at rest.

The data encryption capabilities differ from some other offerings which are typically combined with third-party extensions. By layering native database encryption, which has been contributed by Google, the release helps to create multi-layer security protection.

Garrett Bekker, Senior Analyst, Enterprise Security, 451 Research, said: "Data-centric security is paramount, but cost, performance concerns, and deployment challenges have historically served as barriers to broader adoption of data encryption."

In addition to enhancements to its security, the company has also improved the scalability, availability, performance and interoperability.

To improve availability there is now full integration of Galera Cluster. The scalability is enhanced through optimistic parallel replication, slave execution of triggers when using row-based replication and WebScaleSQL performance enhancements.

Performance enhancements include query timeouts, the addition of multi-threaded flush, page compression for FusioIO/nvmfs to InnoDB improve the performance.
