A group of the world’s largest car manufacturers and digital map maker HERE are planning to explore big data in order to accelerate the development of the next-generation map.

The consortium which include Audi, BMW and Daimler, which owns HERE, have said that the development of a next-generation map is required for automated driving.

The plan is to use incorporate anonymised data from Audi, BMW and Daimler vehicles into the development of maps.

Currently, HERE uses data from more than 80,000 sources for its maps, this includes static data that’s captured by its 3D mapping cars and dynamic data.

By using more data from the car makers, HERE can improve the quality of the maps. The three car makers are planning to gain more industry participation in the coming months.
