More and more people are lying to service suppliers as they take ownership of personal information which could in turn destroy the value of big data.

This was the stark warning delivered at a conference on IOT in London this week.

Stephen Pattison, VP Public Affairs at ARM said that "the game is not over, it is just beginning".

Pattison said: "We must all accept consumers own their data and we need to make sure consumers have a good sense that they own their data."

"Everybody in the business is starting to think about this [concepts of agency and data ownership]. The conversation needs to move from privacy to data use."

Darren Thomson, CTO at Symantec said that for the first time "we can see the importance of personal data privacy.

"More and more people are lying to their service providers. A big part of the IoT ecosystem is big data, analytics and the power of information. That starts falling to pieces if we find a lot of people are lying. I have a feeling it is going to be more about principles."

A report released by Symantec said 60% of customers have experienced a data protection issue.

The study found 13% of the UK population is happy for companies to share their data with third parties with 75% admitting that they believe their data has value.
