Secure flash drive supplier IronKey has produced what is said to be the most physically and cryptographically secure USB storage device yet.
Its new S200 unit has been validated by the National Institute of Standards and Technology as being tamper resistant and meeting demanding FIPS 140-2, Level 3 security requirements.
Physical security mechanisms required at Security Level 3 are intended to have a high probability of detecting and responding to attempts at physical access, use or modification of the cryptographic module.
IronKey said its thumb drives can detect and respond to attempts of physical access, and that its devices also include the use of production-grade components, hard potting material to encapsulate the chip circuitry and a hard metallic enclosure.
Earlier this year IronKey integrated McAfee anti-virus scanning capability into its systems and delivers it on-board several of its USB devices. It also uses AutoRun lock-down to protect against worms.
When an IronKey device is mounted, the McAfee anti-virus scan will automatically run to identify potentially harmful files. This is in addition to IronKey’s active malware defenses which stop worms from spreading, validates software and limits the use of IronKey devices to only trusted networks.
