IBM’s new secure mainframe targets hybrid cloud

News: The system comes with z Systems Cyber Security Analytics to track threats through behaviour analysis.

IBM has released a new mainframe called IBM z13s which is specially designed for hybrid cloud environment.

IBM z13s is claimed to have added security for data encryption ensuring better protection of critical information and transactions without slowing down performance.

IBM Systems senior vice president Tom Rosamilia said: "Fast and secure transaction processing is core to the IBM mainframe, helping clients grow their digital business in a hybrid cloud environment.

"With the new IBM z13s, clients no longer have to choose between security and performance.

"This speed of secure transactions, coupled with new analytics technology helping to detect malicious activity and integrated IBM Security offerings, will help mid-sized clients grow their organisation with peace of mind."

IBM has integrated security into the new z13s hardware adding advanced cryptography features.

It helps in encrypting and decrypting two times faster compared to the earlier version.

The company will also offer a new Cyber Security Analytics service with the system which can monitor threat or malicious activity by analysing user behavior.

The z13s mainframe can carry out encryption at twice the speed compared to the previous mid-range systems through its cryptographic coprocessor cards with faster processors and more memory.

It will allow customers to process double the number of online or mobile device purchases in the same time.

The system also claimed to remove the barrier of implementing encryption as it can encrypt sensitive data without compromising transactional throughput and response time.

z13s mainframe is also designed for hybrid cloud environment with integration of security solution.

Since hybrid deployment creates vulnerabilities despite its flexibility, the company has added security for end to end security.

The z13s provides access to APIs and microservices in a hybrid cloud setting while keeping data integrity intact.

IBM has added its security solution which can effectively address issues like privileged identity management, sensitive data protection and integrated security intelligence.

The system comes with z Systems Cyber Security Analytics service which monitors threat based on behaviour analytics.

Developed by IBM Research, the offering helps users in detecting anomalous patterns on the platform, alerting administrators to potential malicious activity.

It also comes with IBM Security QRadar security software which can gather data from more than 500 sources to help organizations determine if security-related events.

z Systems Cyber Security Analytics service will be offered without any extra charge, beta offering for z13 and z13s customers.

IBM has also added another security layer by offering its Multi-factor Authentication for z/OS (MFA) z/OS.

It asks privileged users to enter a second form of identification, such as a PIN or randomly generated token, to gain access to the system.

The company has integrated the multi-factor authentication directly into the operating system instead through an add-on software solution.

In order to improve the security of the system further it is also partnering with other security solution providers and the its "Ready for IBM Security Intelligence," now includes more software applications from key ISVs integrating their solutions for z Systems.

The new z13 will be available from March 2016.
