IBM buys Butterfly Software

The acquisition will enable IBM to help its clients find new ways to enhance its storage software and hardware applications

IBM has acquired the England based data analysis and migration software company Butterfly Software for an undisclosed amount.

Acquisition of Butterfly Software is expected enhance Big Blue’s storage capabilities to compete against the storage firms like EMC and NetApp.

With the acquisition, IBM helps its clients find new ways to enhance its storage software and hardware applications.

Butterfly offers storage planning software and storage migration tools, helping companies save storage space, operational time, IT budget and power consumption.

The company claims that it helps organisations intelligently analyse and automatically migrate data centre infrastructures reducing the finacial burden of maintaining legacy storage and backup and recovery environments as well as offer consolidation of all data in an efficient way.

Following the acquisition, the data analysis and migration software company will become part of IBM’s Software Group.

In August this year, IBM had signed a $1.3bn deal to acquire a cloud-based human resources (HR) management firm Kenexa.
