Splunk has released the Splunk App for Stream, which it claims will help its customers to index real-time streaming wire data as it moves across a network.

The tool, a free add-on for Splunk Enterprise and Cloud, is designed to give IT departments more insight into their on-premise or cloud-based infrastructures by collecting wire data from network endpoints as well as routers, switches and other devices deployed on the network perimeter.

This will help users control data volumes or opt to filter and correlate the data as they see fit.

Splunk App for Stream can also help with other insights, such as application management, fraud detection, compliance and business analytics by capturing Web interactions, according to the firm.

Leena Joshi, senior director of solutions marketing at Splunk, said: "Unlike traditional and appliance-based solutions, which are difficult to deploy, especially in public cloud infrastructures, the Splunk App for Stream enables customers to gain immediate wire data access on-premises or in public, private or hybrid cloud infrastructures.

"It opens up for our customers a whole new class of data sets to provide continuous IT, security and business insights."

She added that Stream is based on technology that Splunk gained from the acquisition of Cloudmeter last December.

Cloudmeter develops applications that allow IT operations teams to transform real-time captured network data into actionable information.
