Hitachi Data Systems tackle ‘fundamental’ IT shift

Several expansions to its portfolio aimed at providing greater information access to customers.

By Alexander Sword

Hitachi Data Systems has unveiled enhanced software-defined infrastructure solutions to provide greater information access to customers.

The expansions to the portfolio include the extension of the Hitachi Storage Virtualization Operating System to an expanded Hitachi Virtual Storage Platform (VSP) family. This will allow the entire family to offer native heterogeneous storage virtualisation and multi-site active-active storage, in addition to fully compatible data migration, replication and management.

The company is also expanding the Hitachi Unified Compute Platform family to cover small to large converged and hyper-converged infrastructure models. The additions include the hyper-converged Hitachi UCP 1000 for Vmware EVO:RAIL and the converged Hitachi UCP 2000, which target small to medium and branch offices. The Hitachi UCP 6000 converged model integrates the recently launched Hitachi CB200 blade servers.

The storage company also released the Hitachi Hyper Scale-Out Platform to handle fast-growing data analytics workloads. The platform claims to provide cost-effective compute performance and on-demand capacity. Using Hitachi file system technology with open source management and virtualisation software, the solution allows elastic data growth.

In addition, Hitachi Data Systems released several new software products. Hitachi Automation Director works with the Hiatchi Command Suite management infrastructure to provide service templates for application-specific provisioning of storage resources. It supports role-based access control to allow self-service provisioning.

Hitachi Infrastructure Director, meanwhile, is a storage configuration and management application using the latest VSP systems’ APIs to provide management guided by a recommendation engine in environments where simplicity is a priority.

Finally, Hitachi Data Instance Director allows automation and orchestration of Hitachi storage-based snapshot, clone and replication technologies. It also adds live backup, continuous data protection and archive capabilities.

"The fundamentals of IT are changing. Whether it is the adoption of ‘third platform’ technologies and striking the proper balance among the different modes of IT, or the ongoing move to providing IT as a service, there is real change taking place, all while our customers are trying to move to IT as a service," said Sean Moser, senior vice president global portfolio and product management, Hitachi Data Systems.

Moser added: "Customers are looking for ways to be more agile and flexible to gain a competitive advantage. Hitachi is delivering a new generation of software-defined technologies built to support the changing needs of customer application environments to deliver on those goals and connect what works today with what’s next."
