Hitachi Data Systems integrates Pentaho for scale-out big data platform

News: Company aims to overcome the issue of data silos.

By James Nunns

Hitachi Data Systems has launched its next generation platform that will offer native integration with the Pentaho Enterprise Platform.

The scale-out platform will come as pre-configured hardware, with the Pentaho software enabling ingestion of data from multiple sources in multiple formats, this then allows for data analytics to be run across them.

The Hitachi Hyper Scale-Out Platform (HSP) is designed to be easy to install, taking hours rather than months to install, the company said. It will also simplify the creation of an elastic data lake that will simplify customer’s ability to integrate disparate datasets and to run advanced analytic workloads.

"Many enterprises don’t possess the internal expertise to perform big data analytics at scale with complex data sources in production environments. Most want to avoid the pitfalls of experimentation with still-nascent technologies, seeking a clear path to deriving real value from their data without the risk and complexity," said Nik Rouda, Senior Analyst at Enterprise Strategy Group.

The HSP turnkey system is designed to help address primary adoption barriers to big data deployments, mainly by delivering a faster time to insight and value.

The native integration of the Pentaho Enterprise Platform is said to give customers greater control of the analytics data pipelines and provides features such as big data lineage, lifecycle management and enhanced information security.

A number of workloads are suggested as good use cases for the system such as fraud detection and in retail, while the company also has Internet of Things uses cases in mind.

The platform will be offered in two configurations in order to support a broader range of enterprise applications and performance requirements. Serial Attached SCSI disk drives and all-flash completes the set-up for the product that is expected to ship in mid-2016.

One of the big reasons for developing the platform as it has been is so that customers can overcome the issue of data silos. Which is where your data is stored in multiple places and it becomes difficult to access or forgotten about.

HSP comes in a pay-as-you-go model that scales as the business grows with nodes and clusters being added in scale-out method.
Pentaho is capable of managing a number of different data platforms including Hadoop, Apache Spark, Hortonworks, Cassandra and NoSQL.

Pentaho is designed to allow customers to create a data lake with data that can be ingested from object, file and block access systems.

Hitachi Data Systems bought the open source data analytics company in June 2015.
