Worldwide external disk storage systems (DSS) factory market revenue in the second quarter of 2010 grew 20.4% year on year to $5bn, according to a research by International Data Corporation (IDC).
The total revenue from external DSS factory revenue stood at $5.02bn in the second quarter of 2010, an increase of $0.9bn from $4.12bn in the second quarter of 2009.
The Worldwide Quarterly Disk Storage Systems Tracker report revealed that all the major companies recorded a double-digit year-on-year growth, except for Dell, while EMC recorded 25.7% growth.
According to IDC, EMC has maintained its top position by recording $1.29bn revenue for Worldwide external disk storage systems factory revenue followed by IBM with $680m, NetApp with $571m, HP with $567m and Dell recorded $472m for the second quarter of 2010.
IDC storage systems senior research analyst Liz Conner said the first half of 2010 showed continued signs of economic recovery in the disk storage systems market.
"The external disk storage systems market grew 18.6% from the first half of 2009 in terms of factory revenue and 3.0% from the second half of 2009," Conner said.
"Although the first half of 2009 was extremely weak due to the economic crisis, the gain from a relatively strong second half of 2009 shows continued customer investment and importance placed in the storage systems market."
The firm said that in the second quarter of 2010 open networked disk storage market (NAS Combined with Open / iSCSI SAN) revenues grew 29.2% year over year to $4.2bn with EMC maintaining its top position with 28.9% revenue share, followed by NetApp with a 13.6%.
The Open SAN market grew 21.8% year over year, with EMC again topping in vendors segment with 21.8% revenue share, followed by IBM and HP with 15.9% and 14.8% share, respectively.
The NAS market grew 51.1% year over year, led by EMC with 45.6% revenue share and followed by NetApp with 25.2% share.
The iSCSI SAN market posted 49.0% revenue growth compared to the prior year’s quarter. Dell led the market with 32.9% revenue share, followed by HP, NetApp, and EMC, with 14.2%, 13.4%, and 13.3% market share, respectively.
