External disk storage systems factory Q1 revenue up 17%, says IDC

Disk storage systems capacity shipped up 18.8% on year ago quarter

Worldwide external disk storage systems factory revenues were up 17.1% to $5bn in the first quarter of 2010, compared to the same period last year, according to research and analyst firm IDC.

The study showed that the total disk storage systems market grew to $6.7bn in revenues, a 18.8% growth from the prior year’s first quarter. Total disk storage systems capacity shipped reached 3,397 petabytes, growing 55.2% year over year.

EMC maintained its number 1 position in external disk storage systems market with revenue of $1.22bn, accounting for a market revenue share of 24.6%, while IBM stood second with revenue of $579m and 11.7% revenue share. NetApp with revenue of $550m, ended the quarter in the third position with 11.1% market share, while HP and Dell finished the quarter with 10.2% and 10.1% revenue share, respectively, IDC reported.

According to the report, total open networked disk storage market (NAS Combined with Open / iSCSI SAN) grew 26.3% year over year in the first quarter to $4bn in revenues. EMC continued to maintain its leadership in the total network storage market with 28.7% revenue share, followed by NetApp with 13.7% revenue share.

In the Open SAN market that grew 20.3% year over year EMC maintained its lead with 22.2% revenue share. The NAS market grew 44.6% year over year, led by EMC with 45.1% revenue share and followed by NetApp with 26.9% share.

The iSCSI SAN market continued to show strong momentum, posting 45.7% revenue growth compared to the prior year’s quarter. Dell led the market with 36.9% revenue share, followed by NetApp with 14.4%.

Liz Conner, senior research analyst of storage systems at IDC, said: The first quarter saw a resurgence in previously declining segments. In Q1 and the prior quarter, vendors introduced higher-end storage systems aimed at specific use cases such as data deduplication, storage tiering, and database storage.

“The high demand for storage in these use areas, coupled with the improving economic conditions, have led to 16.2% year-over-year growth in the high end segment (PB $250K+).
