Exar has rolled out a new version of its BitWackr Data Deduplication technology offering enhanced performance and data reduction for application and nearline data for incorporation into servers and storage appliances.

According to Exar, the new BitWackr B1605R delivers inline, block-level deduplication, compression, encryption, and thin provisioning for both Linux and Windows NAS appliances and strategic Microsoft applications, including SharePoint, Exchange and Data Protection Manager. In addition, it also supports both Microsoft Windows Server 2003 and 2008 environments.

The company said that the BitWackr is software combined with hardware that enables OEMs, system integrators (SIs) and value-add resellers (VARs) to incorporate data deduplication, data compression, thin provisioning, enhanced security and physical storage capacity monitoring into Windows-based products and OEMs building Linux-based products.

Bob Farkaly, director of product management at Exar, said: IT managers are increasingly turning to their vendors for products that reduce both the capital and operational costs of running a data center while remaining friendly to the environment.

“BitWackr-equipped products deliver storage capacity that requires fewer disk drives, reducing both power consumption and cooling requirements, while maintaining very high levels of performance and assured data integrity.
