Elpida Memory, a supplier of dynamic random access memory (DRAM), has developed a 2-gigabit DDR2 Mobile RAM ECB240ABBCN, by using by the 40nm process line at Elpida’s Hiroshima Plant.

The company said that the new 2Gb DDR2 Mobile RAM features an operating voltage of 1.2V, x16-bit / x32-bit data width, a 1066Mpbs high-speed data transfer rate and can reach 8.5GB/second for a 64-bit system configuration.

Elpida said that its LPDDR2 chip was developed to target the smart phone and tablet PC markets. It uses nearly 30% less operating current compared with Elpida’s existing 50nm products and contributes to extending the operating time of mobile devices.

The company plans to ship the new DDR2 as a bare chip for MCP and to configure it for PoP and FBGA packages. Elpida’s FBGA packages fully leverage die-stacking technology to provide an extensive line-up of 2Gb to 8Gb products.

The company said that DDR2 chip is set to start sampling in August and will start mass production in September.
