Egnyte adds cloud to EMC’s on-premise storage

The new service adds capacity and flexibility to VNX storage hardware.

By Joe Curtis

Filesharing firm Egnyte has found a way to give EMC storage customers the ability to share data via the cloud.

Egnyte’s new technology integrates with EMC’s VNX storage range to turn the hardware into a filesharing platform, allowing users to send stored documents to other devices via the cloud.

Storage Sync for EMC VNX means companies can manage all files across their data centres, in remote offices and in the cloud, as well as getting one view of all their stored data.

Egnyte claimed the service provides secure remote access to files of any size and from any location and device.

CEO Vineet Jain said: "By integrating Egnyte with EMC VNX, we’re able to offer unmatched performance to effectively address the complex requirements of file services and storage access for enterprises around the world."

The integration with EMC comes after a similar deal with NetApp, and demonstrates how Egnyte is trying to differentiate its offerings from those of rivals Box and Dropbox, which remain pure cloud services.

It also means that EMC customers can store data on-premise and have the flexibility to move it around (internally and externally) via the cloud, meaning their current on-premise deployments get added capacity through virtualised storage.
