Digi-Data has launched Store and Forward Engine (SAFE), a new class of internet storage that combines online and local backup technologies.

Digi-Data provides internet backup and file sharing products through telecommunications companies. Based on partner relationships, Digi-Data developed SAFE to meet the online backup requirements of its small-medium business customers.

According to Digi-Data, the SAFE-gateway is a data storage device connected to the customer’s network that synchronises data files to a secure online vault (SAFE-remote). The blend of local and remote storage is expected to simplify backup, improve recovery reliability and give customers more control over their data. If a disaster strikes, the SAFE-gateway is rebuilt and shipped to the designated location while stored files remain accessible using the internet.

The company said that SAFE can be used for storing project files, keeping private, personnel or financial records, and archiving old information. It provides access from remote locations via the web.

Mitch Schwartz, vice president of sales, said: We believe that data protection for small businesses is best left to experts. With a tight network of IT professionals, multiple copies of data, and a continuous monitoring system, we can provide better data protection for small businesses than many Fortune 500 companies.
