Global supercomputer company Cray Inc has announced the launch of two new models purpose built for taking on heavy artificial intelligence (AI) workloads.

The Cray CS-Storm 500GT and the Cray CS-Storm 500NX will arm customers with the ability to power solutions for machine learning and deep learning applications that are accelerator optimised.

In the world today the tech industry and subsequently all industries are standing on the brink of many different breakthroughs, the plan behind these new supercomputers is to gear organisations towards making new progress.

Fred Kohout, Cray’s senior vice president of products and chief marketing officer said: “Customer demand for AI-capable infrastructure is growing quickly, and the introduction of our new CS-Storm systems will give our customers a powerful solution for tackling a broad range of deep learning and machine learning workloads at scale with the power of a Cray supercomputer,”

An internal element that is a driving force behind the power of these devices is an NVIDIA, Tesla GPU accelerator. The new Cray CS-Storm models are fully integrated cluster supercomputers, capable of pumping out up to 187 tera operations per second (TOPS) per node.

Shahin Khan, founding partner at OrionX Research said: “Early adopters of big data analytics and AI have learned a painful lesson as they have struggled to scale their applications and keep pace with data growth and use more sophisticated models.”

With speculation and planning growing surrounding the possibilities of the revolutionising effect AI could have across the industries, any progress will be driven forward eagerly, and taken up rapidly.

“You must have the right systems from the beginning to be able to scale, otherwise inefficiencies accumulate and multiply. Expertise in large scale system design and application optimization is critical. That’s an area that Cray has led for decades,” Mr Khan.
