Employees lose more company data in December than during any other month, according to a survey.

Workers who use mobile devices such as laptops, smartphones and tablets to access their firm’s information often lose the device and data in the run-up to Christmas, according to research commissioned by cloud backup company Mozy.

It found that 70% of people had lost a mobile device, with two-thirds of those losses taking place at around on weekdays and peaking at around 6pm when they leave the office.

"December is a busy month for people professionally and socially as many businesses are closing the quarter or year and employees want to enjoy seasonal celebrations," said Mozy’s Claire Galbois-Alcaix.

"But dashing from the office to meet friends with your laptop in hand, or capturing pictures of your night out on your smartphone, puts not only the device itself at risk, but the data on it too."

The research covering 3,500 people found London, Birmingham and Aberdeen saw more data device losses than anywhere else in the UK.

Galbois-Alcaix advised firms to backup their data to ensure vital information is not lost.

"Being able to work whenever and wherever you need to is a real benefit," she said. "But working on the go can make your data vulnerable if it’s not properly protected."
