Looking to fight digitalisation complexity, Cisco has launched its IoT system together with 15 smart products.
The IoT ecosystem includes an infrastructure designed to manage large-scale systems of diverse endpoints and platforms, and the data deluge they create.
Based on six pillars, the system’s first level is ‘network connectivity’ that includes purpose-built routing, switching, and wireless products available in ruggedised and non-ruggedised form factors.
‘Fog computing’, the second pillar, is a distributed computing infrastructure for the IoT which extends computing capability to the ‘edge’ of networks. 40% of IoT-created data will be processed in the fog by 2018, according to Cisco.
‘Security’ is the third pillar of the IoT System, which unifies cyber and physical security to deliver operational benefits and increase the protection of both physical and digital assets.
The company added that the system provides an optimised infrastructure to implement the fourth pillar, ‘data analytics’, and harness actionable data for both the Cisco Connected Analytics Portfolio and third party analytics software.
The fifth pillar, ‘management and automation’, will leverage security, control and support for multiple siloed functions to deliver an easy-to-use system.
An ‘application enablement platform’, the sixth pillar, will include a set of APIs for industries and cities, ecosystem partners and third-party vendors to design, develop and deploy their own applications on the foundation of IoT System capabilities.
Based on the six pillars, Cisco also introduced 15 new IoT products to its portfolio in the network connectivity, physical and cybersecurity, data analytics and management and automation sectors.
