Chelsio beefs up unified storage offerings

Unified Storage Server offers NAS and SAN capabilities

By CBR Staff Writer

Chelsio Communications, a provider of 10 gigabit ethernet (10GbE) networking and storage offerings, said that it has completed an end-to-end unified storage system offering with the launch of an upgrade to Unified Storage Server (USS 1.1) software, Unified Storage Router (USR 1100), and the delivery of its Unified Manager (UM 1.0) software.

According to Chelsio, the Unified Storage Server provides NAS and SAN capabilities to enable resellers and OEMs to turn any 64-bit Intel- or AMD-based system into a storage system. It can be used with new hardware or it can also be mapped on top of existing, depreciated hardware to convert existing servers into storage appliances. In addition, it supports NFSRDMA and LustreRDMA protocols and features high availability.

In addition, the USS 1.1 can also run as a guest application on a virtual machine on VMware ESX, re-mapping the captive direct attached storage of the server into a SAN. It can run on most ethernet adapters but it will run faster and turns on iSCSI data integrity and RDMA on Chelsio hardware.

The USR 1100 is a 10Gb iSCSI-to-Fibre channel router that features two 10GbE ports, two GbE ports, four 8Gb FC ports, multi-path I/O for both iSCSI clients and FC storage and web-based management. It consists of two identical blades for high availability applications, and occupies a 1U form factor, the company said.

Chelsio said that the UM 1.0 provides a way to access all iSCSI initiators, TOEs and NICs on a network, through a graphical user interface or scriptable CLI. It enables the remote management of aspects of client side of a typical LAN or SAN installation and has the ability to configure the features of Chelsio adapter.

In addition, it supports Windows and Linux initiators, and the roadmap includes support for additional operating systems, the integrated traffic manager, classification engine and iWARP features of Chelsio’s unified wire adapters.

Kianoosh Naghshineh, president and CEO of Chelsio, said: We have achieved one of our main objectives by delivering this complete, low-cost end-to-end storage solution for our end-user customers and resellers. Our Unified Manager software was developed based on customer feedback to promote ease of use and enable true scaling of our unified wire installations.
