You wouldn’t think that business intelligence and the upcoming Sochi Winter Games had much in common…

Well, think again. The algorithms in user-driven business intelligence have been used by QlikTech to create a global games app to give an overview of the event and its sports.

The app was created for the London 2012 Olympics and now the Winter Edition, developed on the QlikView Business Discovery Platform, offers sports enthusiasts globally the chance to visualise, analyse, compare and contrast the extensive history and results of all the winter games over the years.

Using big data to analyse sporting performances isn’t new, but this app is available for free to fans around the world to tap into their country’s results, drawing on historical data from past events.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the app has found that the ‘Eurovision syndrome’ we Brits suffer extends to our prowess in winter sports – the UK is the only nation whose overall performance has declined!

Perhaps we peaked too soon: the best medal haul for GB was 1908 – over 100 years ago. And since then Torvill and Dean were the most remembered British winter athletes. Britain has won more medals in figure skating than any other event (5 gold, 2 silver and 1 bronze)

On the other hand, Norway currently holds the most medals at the Winter Games with 306, and the athlete with the most medals is cross-country skier Bjørn Dæhlie with 12 – also from Norway.

The app will be continually updated once the Games kick off, so keep an eye on how GB is doing with the app.
