Big Data will be ‘big’

Oracle president outlines the importance of Big Data for businesses around the world.

By Duncan Macrae

Oracle outlined its business strategy plans during the second day of Oracle Open World 2013 in San Franciscio, USA.

During his morning keynote speech, Oracle president Mark Hurd explained that the tech leviathan’s focus is firmly on Big Data, with a number of new product developments and enhancements recently completed.

Oracle’s Big Data Appliance now features enterprise-class security for open-source data processing framework, Hadoop.

Additional features for Hadoop have also been released by Oracle, including a connector that is said to enable standard XQuery operations to process and transform XML documents, executing in parallel across the Hadoop cluster.

Also announced was the fact that Big Data Appliance now features Perfect Balance, which is designed to modulate workloads for faster performance in MapReduce jobs.

Oracle’s Big Data product offerings also include its database, for which a new in-memory option was announced by company CEO Larry Ellison on the Oracle Open World 2013 opening day.

According to Hurd, 90% in existence today has been created within the past two years and the world’s data will multiply 50 times over by 2020.
